Xiaoyi Zhu
Hi, my name is Xiaoyi Zhu, and I am the design editor for West Side Story. Being on staff for three years, I learned valuable design skills and life lessons. One design skill I learned is to be resourceful. I like to scour the web for design inspirations and seek new adobe suite techniques. Sometimes inspiration doesn’t have to come from online; it could stem from your surroundings or your peers. Being curious has helped me develop my design style and open-mindedness toward new creative trends. Working in the journalism room has taught me the importance of community. I’ve watched the EICs and design editors that come before me establish strong values and connections between the staff members. I could feel a sense of belonging and safety in the newsroom. This work environment fosters great discussions for ideas and, most importantly, understanding and efficiency in producing works. Creating a respectful and positive work environment has been my goal as the design editor.
Over the years, I have designed 18 issues of the West Side Story. My proudest accomplishments are receiving the Designer of the Year from IHSPA and designing the cover of “The Division Decision,” which won the Pacemaker award in 2021. As design editor, I set new standards based on consistency, helping our magazine designs look professional.
Lastly, I believe the essential duty of a designer is to create visuals that enhance the reader’s understanding of the article, directing their attention to the most critical points. I strive to impact my community by raising awareness of societal problems through creative designs.

In this design, I chose grayscale colors to represent the unknown areas behind this drug epidemic; it also ties in very well with the article’s tone. Another concept I used to portray the “unknown” is the square blocks which act like mosaics that censor us from seeing the problem.

Font, shape, and photo outlines are very popular in sports design so I decided to use them in this design. For the infographic, I wanted to keep the concepts consistent, that’s why I decided to incorporate the black borders again.

I wanted to incorporate sports elements into this design, so I used the mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator to create the flowing nets and waves, and the 3D effect tool to create the sphere. I made sure those elements and the gradient won’t dominate but add a cool effect to the spread. I also experimented with

Collage is a great way to pile illustrations and photos. For the graphic, I made sure that the person’s face is pointed to the title because direction can make the graphic seem cohesive with the design and more interactive. The highlight of this page is the three exclamation marks. It helps deliver the tone of this article and attracts the attention of the readers.

For my last design, I wanted to challenge myself to design infographics. My main goal is to present the data straightforwardly and to use colors to enhance the page. I created the pie charts and the semi-circle rings in Illustrator and then pasted them over to Indesign.
